Obituary for David W. Simmons

David W. Simmons, 70, born to George and Miriam, was welcomed home by the angels on Tuesday, November 14th, 2017, after a long and courageous battle. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Katie McFadden Simmons and a multitude of family, nieces, nephews, and god children, of which he was very proud. As a veteran of the Vietnam War and recipient of two Purple Heart medals and various medals of honor and recognition, David’s service to the United States Marine Corps was never taken for granted. With a Masters Degree in Social Work from Akron University, David was able to share his loving heart and prove his dedication to the care of others. David provided a few final requests that he wished to cross off of his bucket list: a camping trip with his family, something he loved to do but due to the decline in his health had been unable, and to visit the Vietnam Wall Memorial, honoring a part of his life that had troubled him for many years. Both of these requests were completed thanks to his loving family and the Honor Flight Network. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist with the Very Reverend John E. Sheridan, STL, Rector as celebrant. Burial will be in Saint John Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Lamiell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, Katie asks that donations be made to the Honor Flight Network (Jane Julian, Honor Flight Network, 106 Arthur Avenue, Shreveport, LA. 71105), without whom his visit to the Vietnam Wall would not have been possible.
