Obituary for Robert S. O'Brien

Robert S. O’Brien (Bob) passed away Friday March 9, 2018. He was born July 1, 1924 and raised in Stark
County. He graduated from Lehman High School in 1942 and went to
the University of Notre Dame in the fall of that year, joining the Naval
ROTC program. He graduated as an ensign in 1945 and was
assigned to the USS LSM 449 in the Pacific. After the war, he began
working for the O’Brien Lumber and Construction Company. In 1959 he
organized and became president of the Linwood Development
Corporation and in 1966 was named president of O’Brien Lumber. His
professional career spanned 53 years with the company.
Mr. O’Brien has been an active community volunteer for numerous
philanthropic and non-profit organizations in the local community. Over
the years he has served as an active member of the Diocese of
Youngstown after Vatican II. In 1974 he was named ‘Man of the Year’ by the Notre Dame Club of Canton, Ohio. He was a member of the Trust
Committee of the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation from 1990-2009. He
helped to establish Habitat for Humanity of Stark and Carroll Counties.
Bob served as Chairman of the Canton Chapter of the American Red
Cross and was a member of the board of the Catholic Community
League. He has served on a variety of fund raising and building efforts
including the board of the Canton Welfare Federation which became the United Way of Stark County. He also served as a member of the Pastoral Council for the Diocese of Youngstown and was a trustee for the Canton Cemetery Association. In addition, he served as President of the Ohio Association 16th District of the Ohio Lumber and Retail Dealers Association. One of Bob’s favorite institutions was Walsh University and he took great pride watching it grow over the years. He served as member of their advisory board from 1976-1991 and received a distinguished service award in May 2010. Bob and Betty O’Brien raised seven children, and enjoyed their roles as devoted grandparents to eleven and great grandparents to five. His quiet, thoughtful and generous spirit could only be matched by his integrity and humility.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wiley W. Stevens
Scholarship Fund (which he set up) at Walsh University or St. John’s
Basilica.
