Albert V. Meyer

Albert V. Meyer, age 82, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017. Al was born in Alliance, Ohio on January 21, 1935 He was the son of the late Irene Snyder Meyer Groff and Albert A. Meyer. He grew up in Massillon and was a 1954 graduate of Washington High School. He attended Gale Institute of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Canton Actual Business College. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army with the infantry, and a member of the 350th Evacuation Hospital. Al was retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, where he worked in the Accounting Department. He spent his retirement days as a local historian, volunteering for many years at the McKinley Presidential Museum, Spring Hill Farm and on the board of the Plain Township Historical Society. Much of his time was devoted to researching and photographing historical homes for Stark County. He wrote a book on the history of the Sancta Clara Monastery. Al was a member of the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist, Canton Council No. 341 K. of C., Monsignor Graham Assembly 4th Degree, American Legion Post 44 and the Massillon and McKinley FOE. Preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Leslie L. Groff. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara, sister, Gloria (Jack) Silverthorn, niece, nephew, five great-nieces and a great-nephew. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist with The Very Reverend Ronald Klingler as celebrant. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Lamiell Funeral Home.
