Edward L. Mathein, Jr. passed away on January 3, 2026. He was born on July 21, 1933 and was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. He lived a life defined by courage, service, and devotion to others. As a proud veteran of the Korean War, he served his country with honor and integrity, embodying the values of duty and sacrifice. He devoted his career to the Northbrook Illinois Fire Department as a firefighter and Deputy Chief. Known for his bravery and steady leadership, he touched countless lives both on and off duty.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Sue Mathein; sister, Joan; and son-in-law, Jim. Ed is survived by his four children, Larry (Ellen), Jenny (John), Linda (Bill), and Sarah; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill, Dan, and Bob; sister, Nancy; and dear friend, Ginny.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at St. Joseph Senior Living for their years of exceptional care, especially during Ed’s last days.

A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
