Grace Hofsteter, MD, age 90, died Monday. Born February 3, 1926 to the late Calvin and Emma (Graber) Hofsteter, she had lived in Canton most of her life. She was a graduate of Massillon Washington High School, College of Wooster and the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine. Dr. Grace served her internship at Mercy Hospital and both a Fellowship in Internal Medicine and a Traineeship (NIH) in Cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic. She started her private practice in 1954 and had the following accomplishments: first person to establish a Cardiac catheterization laboratory at a community hospital in USA (Timken Mercy Hospital 1957), major roll in starting the coronary care unit at Timken Mercy Hospital and was the first Physician in Stark County to insert a temporary pacemaker. She was a membership of Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, Fellow of the America College of Cardiology, charter member of Certified Medical Directors and cofounder of the Ohio Medical Directors Association, charter member the Society of Saint Luke Timken Mercy Medical Center – 1996, former Secretary-Treasurer of the Timken Mercy Medical Staff, and former member of the Advisory Board and Medical Director of the House Loreto. She was awarded the Washington High School Distinguished Citizen Award -1995. Preceded in death by her parents, sister, Ruth Hofsteter and brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Louella Hofsteter. Services were private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Foundation or Canton Symphony Orchestra.
