With heavy hearts but profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the peaceful passing of James (Jim) J. Blystone on July 20, 2026. Jim was surrounded by the love of family at his home, just as he would have wanted. Born on June 18, 1942, Jim brought joy and light and much laughter to the world for 84 years.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Sue Blystone, with whom he shared a remarkable journey of love, travel, politics and companionship. They married on a crisp, snowy day in Chicago on January 29, 1966, and earlier this year they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their entire family. True to his character, Jim filled the event with laughter, love, and unforgettable moments, leaving behind cherished memories and countless stories for his family to treasure.

Jim's career as a Foreign Service officer was not just a profession but a calling. A career in the Foreign Service was first experienced when he served as a Marine Security Guard at embassies overseas. He rose to the esteemed rank of Career Minister in the Senior Foreign Service, where he made significant contributions during pivotal moments in history. Serving in Chile post the 1973 coup d’état, Argentina after the 1976 coup d’état and was a pivotal piece of history with Operation Condor, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Beirut Lebanon following the 1983 U.S. Embassy bombing, Egypt, Iraq, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, among other assignments, he consistently demonstrated unwavering dedication, courage, and skill. Jim's work left a lasting impact in the countries he served and was deeply respected by colleagues and friends alike.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was known for his quick wit and infectious laughter, always being the first to chuckle at his own jokes. His humor, warmth and genuine care were constants in his life, drawing people to him and nurturing countless friendships. He was always able to find a special and unique way to connect with each person he met ensuring a lasting memory was held by all.

Jim is survived by his loving children, James (Julie) Blystone, Jr. and Nicole (Anthony) Coates, who were the pride of his life. He was a cherished grandfather to five grandchildren: Anthony (Victoria) Coates, Madalynn Coates, Sydney Coates, Benjamin Coates, and Kensington Blystone, along with being a great-grandfather to Amelia and Langston.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to your local charity that supports the great veterans of this country or countries abroad, in honor of Jim’s generous spirit and commitment to bettering the world for all who served.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Better Together Hospice and Jim’s home care team, Liz Borsellino and Melissa Carrick, whose care, kindness, patience, and unwavering support provided everyone comfort, allowing him to spend his last moments at home with family surrounded by love and peace.

We invite friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by Jim to join us in celebrating his life and legacy, cherishing the many memories and love he leaves behind.
