John "Jack" F. Carney III of Canton, OH passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, June 11, 2023. He was born on April 3, 1945 in Philadelphia, PA to the late John Jr. and Eleanor Carney. Jack was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He graduated from Youngstown Cardinal Mooney High School in 1963, after which he went on to earn his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, IN, and his Master's degree in Education from the University of Dayton. On June 21, 1969, he married Suzanne (Cooper) at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Struthers, OH.

Jack's mathematical and analytical aptitudes, along with his intuitive understanding of the game of football, served as the foundation of a successful 51-year career in education and coaching student-athletes. He began his career with Canton Central Catholic High School in 1967, where he taught all levels of math in addition to coaching football, golf, baseball, and track. It was here where Jack established unwavering friendships that helped shape him into who we all know today and who we will never forget.

In 1976 through 2004, he taught math and coached football at both Canton Timken ('76-'80) and McKinley ('80-'04) High Schools. He coached several student-athletes who went on to have successful collegiate and NFL careers. Jack was a member of the coaching staff for the 1981 and 1998 State Champion football teams, as well as the 1997 State & National Championship team. In 2011, Jack was inducted into the Canton McKinley High School Football Hall of Fame.

After retiring from Canton City Schools, he continued teaching as an adjunct professor at Walsh University in North Canton, OH, where he also served as an academic liaison to the athletic department. His work was a testament to his commitment to get the most out of his students and his love for bringing people together to achieve great things.

Above all else, Jack loved golfing, his family, and the joy of spending time with them. He especially loved watching his sons and grandchildren compete in sporting events. In addition to his loving wife, Suzanne, he is survived by his sons, John IV, Ryan (Rachel), Joel (Lauren); five grandchildren, Brendan, Erin, Sarah, Meghan, and Elliot, as well as his beloved Boxer, Fiona.

Family and friends will be received on Friday June 23, 2023 from 9am-11am at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church in Canton. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated immediately after. Interment will be a private and quiet ceremony at Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. James Johns and all the physicians and staff at both Akron General Cleveland Clinic and Aultman Woodlawn Compassionate Care Center for the kind and comforting care they provided to Jack, especially in his final hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made through Central Catholic High School or the Aultman Compassionate Care Center.
