John William Oliver, Jr. of Canton, died Tuesday, March 21. He was 87. Oliver was born August 17, 1929, near Pittsburgh, PA to John and Helen Oliver. A graduate of Mercersburg Academy and the University of Indiana, Oliver was professor emeritus of history at Malone University from 1966 until retirement. Books authored or co-authored by Oliver cover Malone and Quaker history, and Oliver family history. Oliver directed the Greater Canton Writers' Guild and the Conference on Faith and learning at Malone, and chaired the North American Chapter of the Orthodox Peace Fellowship. Preceded in death by brother Robert, Oliver is survived by his loving wife, Marge; children Kim and John of Tennessee, their mother, Juanelle; daughters Andrea and Amy of Louisville. He will be dearly missed by grandchildren, Jesse, Caleb, Jason, Joshua, Rachel, Aaron, Anastasia, Genevieve, Evangeline, Jonah, John Gabriel, Katie, Anna, Everett, Hailey, Zane, and by extended family. Calling hours are Friday, 5-7 pm, followed by a memorial service, with funeral on Saturday, 11 am, all at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church, 2027 18th St NE, Canton.
