John S. Palen, 63, passed away in Aultman Hospital on Saturday, September 18, 2021, following an extended illness.
John was born on October 10, 1957 in Canton, Ohio, the son of Michael T. Palen, MD and Martha Palen. After graduating from Glenwood High School, John continued his education at Bowling Green State University, where he majored in history and minored in music. After graduating, John pursued music professionally: recording, producing and playing with popular jazz groups in northwestern Ohio and the Detroit area. He recorded advertising jingles at that time as well, often amused to hear his work backing multiple products. His ongoing love of history led him to return to school for a Michigan Teaching Certificate from Oakland University, paving the way to a history and U.S. government teaching position in the Royal Oak School District for many years.
Eventually returning to Canton in 1997, John rekindled old friendships and spent the following decade working as a computer systems manager for Fame Beverage until the time of its sale. Living in Canton enabled him to support his Mom in her determination to live independently through her mid 90's, for which she was deeply grateful.
An avid outdoorsman, John was happiest fishing, camping, and sharing his vast knowledge of birding with many friends and family. His dog, Trixie, "found" him on his 47th birthday, when she was lost and whimpering beneath his window, becoming a constant companion for nearly two decades.
John enjoyed and maintained loyal friendships, including some forged decades ago in elementary school; his companion of many years, Karen Kristy, among them. He will be missed by all.
John is survived by his mother, his sisters Stephanie (Sam) Godfrey of Austin, TX and Patricia (Pete) Michaels of Manchester, MA, and his niece and nephew. He was predeceased by his father and brother, Mark. A private burial has taken place and no services are planned.
