MARY JO MCGONAGLE

Mary Jo McGonagle, 86, of Canton, Ohio, passed away in her home in the early morning of January 1, 2023 surrounded by family. Born April 17, 1936 in Canton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Laura (Lab) Tracy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David McGonagle; son, Keith McGonagle; and brother, James Tracy.

A lifelong resident of the Canton area, she was a 1954 graduate of Canton Central Catholic High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Duquesne University with a major in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career in the Perry Local School District. Mary Jo married her husband David in 1965 and together they shared 46 years. She took a break from teaching to raise their five sons. She later resumed teaching at St. Paul School in North Canton where she retired in 1998.

She was a parishioner of St. Paul Catholic Church for 49 years and was a member of the Lively Ladies group. She previously served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who had a passion for welcoming family and friends into her house on any occasion. She especially enjoyed the Christmas season, carefully planning and preparing for the family gatherings. She also liked traveling to spend time with her children and their families.

She is survived by sons, Timothy (Allyson) McGonagle of Ft. Collins, Colorado,Patrick (Kristin) McGonagle of Granville, Ohio, Michael (Eunhee) McGonagle of Louisville, Kentucky, and Kevin (Irene) McGonagle of Sugar Land, Texas; grandchildren, Quinn, Molly and Kate of Colorado, Abby (fiancé Derek Taylor) of Georgia, Maggie (Dakota) Smith, Jack and Nora of Ohio, Jennifer of Kentucky, Ethan and Eric of Texas; sisters, Sister Donna Tracy, C.D.P. and Eileen (Tom) McCarthy; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Tracy.

Family and friends are welcome for visitation, Friday, January 6 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, Lamiell Funeral Home, 1353 Cleveland Avenue, NW, Canton, with a Rosary Service beginning at 6:45 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held, Saturday, January 7 at 10:00 am, St. Paul's Catholic Church, 241 S. Main Street, North Canton. Father John Keehner will preside. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Paul's Catholic Church, Aultman Hospice, or Aunt Susie's Cancer Wellness Center.
