Michelle "Shelly" M. Painter, age 51 of Canton, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on July 6, 2016 following a courageous 18 month battle with lung cancer after surviving cervical cancer in 2009. She was born June 17, 1965 in Canton, Ohio, the beloved daughter of John (Jack) and Nancy (Perretta) Hamel. Shelly was the owner and operator of Shelly's Daycare for over 20 years where she enjoyed being a caregiver for children in the community. Other hobbies included gardening, vacation cruises in the Caribbean, and attending Cincinnati Bearcats football games. She was a member of First Friends Church in Canton. Shelly lived in Ohio until 1976, when the family moved to Troy, Michigan, where she graduated from Athens High School in 1983. She moved back to Canton at age 19 where she was married, received an Associate's Degree, and taught at Headstart as well as Massillon High School. Shelly was known for her kindness, affection, and big heart. This was exemplified by her life-long dedication to caregiving for children, the opening up of her home to those in need, and serving as a second mother to many. Along with her parents, Shelly is survived by her daughters Andrea and Kelly Painter, son Brad (Margie) Tyson, sisters Kim (Kerry) Sutton and Linda Hilliker, brothers John, Joe (Jennie), and Scott (Dawn Trethewey) Hamel, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. Shelly was proceeded in death by her grandparents Harold and Francis Hamel, Peter and Winifred Perretta, and her beloved cousin Jesse White. Friends may call Sunday from 2-5 p.m. and Monday from 9:30-10:15 a.m. at the Lamiell Funeral Home. Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at First Friends Church, 5455 Market Avenue North, Canton, Ohio 44714 with Pastor Paul Johnson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family to defray funeral expenses. Per her wishes, Shelly will be cremated and buried at Christian Memorial Gardens in Rochester Hills, Michigan, where an additional memorial service will be held at a later date.
