Monsignor James Ralph Kolp

June 11, 1925 — February 6, 2025

Monsignor James Ralph Kolp peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the age of 99. He was born in Canton, Ohio on June 11, 1925.

Monsignor Kolp was preceded in death by his parents, Merton and Anna Kolp; three older siblings, Mary Jo Savage, Sister Kathleen Kolp, and Dr. Joseph W. Kolp. Monsignor Kolp is survived by three nieces, Jane (John) Stone, Carol Savage, Tricia Kolp; and nephew, Peter (Paula) Kolp. In addition, he is survived by many great-nieces and nephews, and several great-great-nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many dear friends including Bishop Neal Buckon, Father Donald Feicht, and Ellen Altieri.

Monsignor Kolp graduated from St. Johns High School in Canton before entering the Seminary. Monsignor Kolp took his role in the family very seriously while celebrating Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, and Weddings. He concelebrated his parents' funerals as well as his two sisters, brother, two nieces, and two nephews.

Monsignor was always active in the communities where he served. A proud Eagle Scout, Kolp was active in Scouting for 90 years. His involvement included the "National Catholic Committee on Scouting" and the Buckeye Council of the Boy Scouts of America. His service included many, many years with the Knights of Columbus on the local, state and national level. Well into his 90's he participated annually in the "Right to Life" March in Washington DC.

One of Monsignor Kolp's greatest joys was his many parishes that he was assigned to over the years. His parishioners were his second family and cherished every moment with all these wonderful people.

He enjoyed visiting the elderly and was always delighted when he found a piano so he could play for them. He had the very special talent of "playing by ear". Never reading a note of music.

Never to be outdone by his nephews and great-nephews, he was always up for a game of HORSE on the basketball floor or a round of golf. Not many witnessed his competitive side, but it was there.
