Ralph Andrew Schen, age 88, died Thursday, December 1, 2016, at Canterbury Villa of Alliance, where he had lived since December 2015. Born in Canton on May 24, 1928, to the late Joseph and Mary (nee Petz) Schen, Ralph was a former resident of Canton and Uniontown. He suffered with Alzheimer's for many years. Ralph was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, son and brother and was well-respected by a great many friends, neighbors, and co-workers. He enjoyed golf, bowling and yard work, especially tending his roses and other flowers. Ralph volunteered at the Samaritan's Table at St. John's during the early 2000s, until failing health prevented him from continuing. He attended Edgefield Elementary School and graduated in 1946 from Central Catholic High School. Ralph was employed as a meat cutter at Dave's Handy Store in North Canton and at Fisher's Foods in Canton, where he was Deli Manager when he retired in 1991. He was a long-time member of First Christian Church Ralph loved to drive and to travel, visiting 30 or more states and Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. He especially enjoyed nearly 20 annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach, SC. Besides his parents, Ralph is pre-deceased by his brother, John Schen in 1993, and a sister, Elizabeth A. Schen in 2016; second wife, Betty J. (Hubbard) Schen in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Ann L. (Nieschwitz) (Makley) Schen of Uniontown; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret (Joe) Bocija of Canton; his first wife and mother of his children, Donna L. (Robinson) (Schen) Graening; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Edwin Garnett; son, Jerry M. Schen, all of North Canton; grandchildren Eric (Monya) Garnett of Winter Haven, FL; Julie (Jody) Loftus of Levittown, PA; grandchildren Joshua M. Schen of Canton, Jordan (Kristen) Schen, serving in the Marine Corps. Also survived by great-grandchildren, Nathan Schen (son of Joshua); also children and grandson of Eric and Monya; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great nephews; step-children, Richard and Gordon Makley; Linda (Jeff) Ashcraft; Debra (Alex) Fulton and six step-grandchildren. Ralph's family would like to thank the medical and support staffs at Canterbury Villa and Bella Care Hospice (formerly Tridia Hospice) for the excellent, compassionate care they gave Ralph during this past year. Services are Monday at 11 a.m. in the Lamiell Funeral Home. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday (TODAY) from 2-4 p.m. and Monday from 10-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Samaritan's Table, c/o Commquest, 625 Cleveland Avenue, NW, Canton, Ohio 44703.
