Pauline M Payne (1929-2020) and Richard V Payne Sr. (1928-2020) passed away due to complications of Covid-19. Their 70-year love affair ended on Christmas Day (Pauline) and December 26 (Richard) while in the care of Mercy Hospice.
Pauline was born in Canton, OH on April 27, 1929 to Pauline (Hurtak) and Michael Granchi. She was the youngest of eleven children in a large Slovak family. Pauline graduated from Timken High School. She spent 38-years with the Nicholas Insurance Agency managing her job and raising two sons - Richard Jr and Jeffrey. Pauline lived her faith and gave freely of her time, talent and treasures to St. Michael's Church. She enjoyed teaching new church lectors and involvement on the liturgical committee. She even mended and laundered the priest's albs if needed. There was no job too small nor too large for the church she loved.
She was also proud of her involvement with AARP and spent time as it's local chapter President (Everhard-Belden 4121). She was a member of the Massillon Woman's Club. She was happiest with family. Ten brothers and sisters made for enormous (and loud) family reunions. She was a skilled baker. She made over 3000 cookies for her son's wedding (with a little help from her sisters). We all enjoyed her traditional Vilija supper on Christmas Eve, her favorite season.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, son Jeffrey, and ten siblings - brothers Steve, Michael, John, Joseph, Paul and Frank Granchi, sisters Mary Homze, Helen Schneider, Ann Heretta and Elizabeth Frank.
Richard was born in Canton, OH on January 26, 1928 to Mildred (Granger) and Zeb Payne. Richard (Dick) attended McKinley High School and proudly served in the USMC during World War II. He found the love of his life Pauline and they married July 1950. They built a home in Jackson Twp. and raised two sons. Dick spent most of his working life as a truck driver for Sugardale Foods. He was also a talented carpenter and handyman who gave his time and talent to many. He had a great love of family and his faith. He was an active member of Saint Michael Catholic Church for over 60-years. He spent countless hours offering his services to the church in whatever capacity needed. He particularly enjoyed serving as an usher and greeter at the early Sunday morning Mass. He was happiest either working with his tools in his home work shop or in his yard driving his John Deere.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Robert and son Jeffrey. His youngest brother Thomas survives.
Richard and Pauline are survived by their son Richard (Norma), grandchildren Zachary (Jessica), Megan, Amanda (Max) Jennings and great grandchildren Landon and Olivia Chenevey and Vivian Payne.
We are forever grateful for the compassion and skilled care administered by the Sisters and staff at The House of Loreto.
A Mass of Christian Burial has taken place. Memorial donations can be made to the House of Loreto.
