SHARYN L. GATES (née Schweinfurth, formerly Heffner)

Sharyn L. Gates, a lifelong resident of Canton, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on June 5, 2025. She was 83.

Born on June 28, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Pearl (Catlin) Schweinfurth. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Leland Heffner; her second husband, Clinton Gates; and her beloved cousin, Dr. Ronald L. Miller

Sharyn graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959 and earned her bachelor's degree in education from Slippery Rock University. She was a lifelong member of Grace United Church of Christ and devoted her life to serving the Lord and His people.

She loved to read—especially mysteries—and dedicated her career to teaching children the joy of reading. Known for her selflessness and generous heart, she volunteered regularly at the Grace Just in Time Food Ministry and the Warren Township Community Center—even in her final days. She brightened the lives of all who knew her and was an inspiration to generations of students.

She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Victor (Michelle) Heffner and Dr. Christopher L. (Shawn) Heffner; her grandchildren, Danielle and Evan Heffner; and her cousins, Sandy Mitchell and Lee Ellen Dye.

Family and friends are welcome for visitation on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Lamiell Funeral Home, Canton, with a service immediately following at 4:00 PM. Pastor Jay Schmidt will officiate.
