SYLVIA GRACE BARTHEL

Sylvania Grace Barthel, of Canton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024.

She was blessed with 99 wonderful years. She was born on April 30, 1925, in Williamsport, Ohio to her late parents, Lawrence and Grace (Turner) Hirsch. Also preceding Sylvia in death was her husband, Eugene; son, Breen; sister, Connie Gaus; and daughter-in-law, Darcy Barthel.

Teaching, she chose to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people. She encouraged her students to dream big and was always supportive. She was a bright light, a friendly face, and a gentle guide day in and day out, molding the minds and hearts of her students. She was committed to her marriage of 63 wonderful years she shared with her husband, Eugene., she was a devoted mother to her sons, Breen and Pat, and unselfishly put their needs before her own. She was privileged to give to those who were entrusted to her care.

Sylvia's memory will be treasured by those who survive; son, Pat Barthel of Canton; former daughters-in-law, Barbara Barthel and Dotti Koller; grandchildren, Shannon (Jacobbi) Harper, Shawn Barthel, Brandon (Ashley) Moore and Zachary Moore; great-grandchildren, Ellis Harper, Aedon and Adylin Moore; several nieces and nephews; and the many lives she touched.

Visitation will be Monday, May 20, 2024, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, Lamiell Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Monday, May 20, 2024, 11:00 AM at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist. The Very Reverend Dr. David M. Misbrener will serve as celebrant. Interment will take place at North Lawn Cemetery.
