William L. “Bill” Halter

Bill loved gardening and the outdoors.

William L. “Bill” Halter, a devoted husband and father, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2026, at age 88. He is survived by his wife, Clara Halter, for 67 years.

Bill was born in Canton, Ohio, on January 10, 1938. A left-handed first baseman, he spent seven seasons (1957–1963) in the Boston Red Sox minor-league organization, including standout years with the Corning Red Sox. He was later inducted into the Greater Canton Amateur Sports Hall of Fame. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Business Administration. While playing baseball in Corning, New York, he met Clara Anne Giardina.

After his baseball career, Bill built a career in construction project management. He had three siblings: Judy Enright of Brighton, Michigan; Michael of Canton, Ohio; and Patrick, who preceded him in death.

Bill and Clara had three children: Jeff, Chris, and Janae. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Avery, Bethany, Caleb, Evan, Seth, Faith, and Ava, as well as his six great-grandchildren, Linken, Hudson, Rivan, Opal, Violet, and Frances.

His life centered on his family.

He valued honesty, integrity, and his family’s success. He spent countless hours teaching his children, supporting their activities, and attending their youth sports games, including baseball, softball, basketball, football, horseback riding, and more. He remained curious to the end, always eager to learn and share what he knew.

Bill loved gardening and the outdoors. He was a Toastmasters member and sang with the Hall of Fame Barbershop Chorus. He stayed active at the YMCA, where he and his good friend Thurman Munson played handball. His life centered on his family.

The family would like to thank the doctors, staff, and compassionate care teams at Aultman Hospital, Canton Christian Home, and Aultman Hospice & Palliative Care for their professional and kind care.
